We’re going to switch things up a little bit this week and instead of just giving you this week’s trailers, I’ll also give you my “first impressions” on how I think the movie will actually turn out. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
Well, it’s another one of those weekends where there isn’t much happening in the way of multiple releases as most of the studios get out of the way of yet another comic book superhero movie, Green Lantern. But there’s something for kids of all ages as well — Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Can Ryan Reynolds kick-start another comic book franchise, and can Jim Carrey make a triumphant return to the big screen while surrounded by adorable penguins?
Green Lantern
Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard
Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action
The trailer certainly looks awesome with all of it’s colorful, CGI effects but the general consensus is that it has never really recovered from the first, disastrous trailer. Ryan Reynolds certainly looks the part, but is he going to be serious Ryan or snarky Ryan? My expectations are low, and I’ve got the lowest of expectations for the 3D conversion process. Like I always say, if it’s not filmed in 3D then don’t try to release it in 3D!
Mr. Popper’s Penguins
Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury
Rated PG for mild rude humor and some language
Okay, I’m a sucker for penguins. Who can resist the little guys? I also like Jim Carrey in comedy mode. Plus the cast includes Carla Gugino and Angela Lansbury!!! I know the movie is based on a book, but I’m not familiar with the story. Hopefully the movie doesn’t pander just to children … and that this isn’t a desperate attempt by Carrey to get back into audiences’ good graces by going the family film route (a la Eddie Murphy). But, it’s got penguins!
