The CliqueClackites and I had a bit of back and forth jawing about the recent news that Iron Man 3 is underway and moving forward, right on the heels of the behemoth that is The Avengers. Well … of course IM3 is on the fast track. Was there every any doubt?
I can’t recall where I first heard it, but there was news it was moving forward way before the release of The Avengers. And now, with the enormous success of the Marvel super team flick, how can the folks at Disney not be giddy about the forward motion of Tony Stark’s alter ego and the most popular Marvel franchise yet?
So … what did we Clackers have to say about it?
An: Wow. Marvel is going to ride this Avengers train until it just can’t go anymore …
Katie: Well, they’re going to tie all the franchises back in to Avengers 2 eventually… there’s also going to be a Thor 2 next year and a Captain America 2. Pretty sure a Nick Fury prequel is in the mix somewhere.
But yes, pretty sure Marvel’s going to be riding Tony Stark for a long, long time.
Chuck: Iron Man 3 was obviously already scheduled to start production long before The Avengers hit it big. I don’t think they could have gotten all of that organized within the space of a few weeks. Plus shots of the Patriot suit leaked out last week. Thor 2 and Captain America 2 were already in the pipeline as well. It would have been more interesting, had Avengers failed, to get a press release saying further editions had been cancelled. Big question now is: will they do another stand-alone Hulk movie now that Mark Ruffalo has gotten such glowing reviews and made the character his own (and has allegedly been signed to a six-picture deal with Marvel)?
Ivey: Yeah, I don’t think there is a way that they won’t do a Hulk movie at this point, but I’d almost rather they didn’t, and let Ruffalo play a major role in all of the related properties.
Michael: The word’s been out for quite some time that Iron Man 3 was in pre-production and Capt. America was on the books. Waiting to see what’s going on with The Hulk. Would I like to see another stand-alone Hulk flick? Yes. But I like Ivey’s suggestion of him playing roles in the varying properties ala the old “Marvel Team-Up” books …
Ivey: Now, if it were a Drunk Hulk movie, that’s a hulk of an entirely different color.
You know … Ivey kids. (But … if there was a Drunk Hulk movie rumored to be in the works, I would be all over it.)
So let’s hear your thoughts on Iron Man 3. What say you?
I think the movies have a small problem on their hands moving forward, and it’s with moving the characters forward and making villains. IM2 didn’t really do much, you had Tony taking a couple steps toward the Avengers and introduced a weak villain. I don’t know if making just Thor 2, Capt. America 2, and IM3 is going to properly build for a new Avengers movie. We know we have to eventually get to Thanos. We will need another Thor to build him up. Not Thor 2 mind you, but another movie that is thematically different from the other movies to introduce other story elements. Guardians of the Galaxy would work to that, but that’s going to be hard as hell to make then fit back in. Dr. Strange could introduce magic and the supernatural, but it’s another one that, while easier to fit back to The Avengers than Guardians, you have to tie back to the main continuity. IM3 already right now looks like a cluster fuck. Iron Patriot, Aldrich Killian with the Extremis virus and The Mandarin pulling the strings sounds like a cluster fuck. IM3 looks just like an IM story that won’t really tie into The Avengers 2, and just continue the Government Persecution story line with the Iron Patriot and make a big story with the virus. You might be able to tie in Dr. Strange if you do Mandarin in certain ways, but already it seems loaded. Cap 2 is more than likely going to be the death of Peggy story line that Weadon originally wanted in Avengers. Crap, I hit submit, we’ll just have to see where things go. But IM2 doesn’t leave me confidant in development of new villains.
Other point, we prob won’t be seeing another Avengers till 2016 with the seemingly slow rate these movies are moving.
Also, Thor 2 is more than likely stealing the Galaxy Gauntlet from the Asgard vault. You know, since we’ve seen it there already and it’s kinda been a theme with the Tesseract and the original Thor movie. I can also really see Loki being a Hannibal Lector/Silence of the Lambs type of villain.
Not a huge Iron Man fan, but more Thor and Cap would not be a bad thing! Rather than a stand-alone Hulk film, maybe Hulk could have a role in Iron Man 3 – Tony Stark and Bruce Banner are really fun together in an odd couple way.

. . . . .
Great.
Now I have at least a dozen different Hulk / Iron Man scenarios dancing in my head ala The Odd Couple … complete with the theme song bouncing around my skull.
Thanks for that, Ruby …
