Chris Hemsworth talks Avengers and Thor

When I attended Philly Comic Con this past weekend, Chris Hemsworth called Robert Downey, Jr.’s Iron Man the godfather of Marvel for setting off the chain reaction of successful Avengers-related films.

At the time, I didn’t understand what he meant or why he’d mention Iron Man when The Avengers remained red hot and Thor was not a distant memory. But, as Michael’s post revealed, Marvel Studios announced Iron Man 3’s production start this week. Although Jon Favreau won’t return as director, he will continue to act in and executive produce the third installment, while Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon series) directs. In the third movie, Iron Man faces the Mandarin while Don Cheadle and Gwynneth Paltrow reprise their roles. Production will take place in North Carolina, Florida and China and hit theatres in 2013.

Hemsworth also talked about Thor 2 (which will feature Idris Elba and Natalie Portman, is written byDon Payne and Robert Rodat and will hit theatres in winter 2013). He’s incredibly excited for Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) to direct the second installment. In fact, when he mentioned Game of Thrones, a fanboy grin touched his lips while a larger fanboy yell arose from the audience.

Regarding the Avengers film, Kenneth Brannagh advised him to make his Thor portrayal truthful and real. While he listed other Avengers actors, who he respected and looked forward to meeting; interestingly enough, he didn’t mention Scarlett Johansson. But, then again, with only 45 minutes to answer questions and lovestruck fans throwing out hug requests, who has the time?

On a side note, he loved filming Cabin in the Woods and mentioned that Joss Whedon basically told him to do his thing.
