I’m not sure why it’s such a big deal, but then I don’t live in the world of entertainment. I’ve just never understood why it’s no big deal for some celebrities to come out of the closet about their sexuality while at the same time others seem positively terrified to do so. Ever since his stint on American Idol way back in the second season, the rumors have run around that Clay Aiken was gay.
And yet, it wasn’t until today that Clay Aiken officially came out and announced his homosexuality. The story will “break” in the next issue of People with Aiken on the cover with the blurb “Yes, I’m Gay.” The real question is if this admission will have any impact on his reputation or the sales of his latest album, On My Way Here. While I would imagine most of his fan-base already at least suspected this, for some this will be a huge deal. Especially with Aiken being a devout Christian, as there are those that believe the two cannot co-exist. So why keep it a secret? There’s plenty of successful openly gay singers. Is it the American Idol connection?
