After premiering with the highest ratings of any new series on Sci Fi since Eureka, Amanda Tapping’s pet project seemed almost inevitably headed toward a pick-up. Today, Sanctuary got that second season renewal, with 13 more episodes slated for 2009. I think the show is really starting to settle into a nice groove, fleshing out some of the supporting cast at the sanctuary and getting more creative with the abnormals.
In a way, this is also a validation of the extensive green screen technology in use. While there are still some weak spots, for the most part they do a nearly seamless blending of live-action and special effects. And with the green screen, the budget is primarily computer graphics, which has to be cheaper than extensive sets and costuming. What this means is that we have the ability to reduce the budget for high quality science fiction and fantasy shows by implementing more of the techniques being pioneered here.
I think it’s time for Sci Fi to create the Sci Fi Universe. There’s no reason that all their shows couldn’t co-exist in the same reality. Then imagine if the team from Sanctuary has to head to Eureka to find an abnormal. They could bump into Sheriff Carter and he’d have to help them track down the abnormal in the woods around the city. Genius contraption shenanigans ensue. Then the military gets called in because the abnormal is actually from the other side of a Stargate and needs to be sent home. Or something like that. Make it a three-part crossover event!
So what is it about Sanctuary that you like the best? I’m enjoying the unraveling of the larger Sanctuary-verse. The introduction of more abnormals, thinking about how they all co-exist in this world, where they came from and even seeing how vast an operation Dr. Magnus runs. Supposedly there are other Sanctuaries out there as well. Maybe we’ll wind up with Sanctuary: SC1 and Sanctuary: Atlantis before it’s all done.
LOL! I love your idea of a crossover between Sanctuary, Eureka, and what will have to be Stargate: Universe (as there are only six episodes of Stargate Atlantis left – SOB!).
I’m enjoying seeing one of my favorite actresses, Amanda Tapping, in a new role. I’m also enjoying seeing another favorite actor, Christopher Heyerdahl, creating two rich characters in one series — Big Foot and John Druitt. I’m enjoying watching the mythology of this new series being enlarged on.
Thank you, Clique Clack, for your continued support of Sanctuary. And congratulations to Sanctuary on its second season pick up.
