This may not be a fair question. In fact, I may not be able to choose (I’ll have to make sure there is a poll choice that reflects that!). But I thought it would be fun to ponder and discuss.
If you could only own the DVDs of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel, which ones would you choose? I can argue both sides of the coin. I love owning the Buffy DVDs because it is easy to go back and re-watch my favorite episodes, like “A New Man,” “The Zeppo,” “Fear Itself,” “Hush,” “Once More with Feeling,” just to name a few. I’d miss that.
However, if I want to watch a masterfully developed story arc, I’d probably pop in Angel and watch the episodes where Wes fell into his depression and took up with Lilah, or my favorite two episodes, the crossover with Buffy where Angel became human.
So how to choose? I’ll let you decide. Take the poll and elaborate in the comments — have fun with this one!
You’re right. That’s not a fair question. I would choose Angel if I could only have one, but everyone else in my family is firmly on the side of Buffy, which means I am outnumbered and would lose. The funny thing is, there are probably more stand alone episodes of Buffy that I would consider favorites, but I really love the overall story arcs on Angel. Plus I could just watch David Boreanaz all freaking day long.
Thank heavens that we not only own all of Buffy and Angel, but Firefly and now Dr. Horrible as well. Go Joss!

Yep, we’ve got ‘em all too, and I’m not giving up any! ;-)
Buffy for sure – I haven’t gotten them all yet (just started watching it in the last few months, after becoming a Whedonite thanks to Dr. Horrible and Firefly) and I just love the Buffy characters too much to think I might ever prefer Angel to it (as it is I am not looking forward to later seasons with less Giles… I am a HUGE Giles fan!)
Great Question, but its an easy answer for me. Angel. I love Buffy, but have never gotten around to owning all of the DVDs. Angel I’ve got them all.
The irony is that I didn’t like Angel (the character) when he was on Buffy, so I only gave Angel (the show) like a 3-4 episode try out when it debuted. I didn’t catch on, but got hooked back in like six years later when I watched a couple of episodes on TNT. I owned all five seasons within 45 days :)
I own (almost) all Seasons of Angel that are worth watching, namely Season 1 and 2 – I miss 5. I don’t even want to think about 3 and 4, those abysmal Connor and “The World’s going to End” Cordelia Storylines. Brrrr… it all was fixed when Spike entered the scene and then TPTB cancelled it. I still haven’t watched the last six episodes of Angel so to me the show’s still not over. I still think there’s so much more they could’ve done with Spike on the show. I really love James Marsters.
Buffy on the other hand is a treasure I will never ever give up. NEVER! :-)
Season 3 of Angel doesn’t bother me so much (basically because of the interesting arc Wesley went through). I’m with you on 4 though :)
It’s kindof apples and oranges, in a way, despite their connections. But I got the Chosen Collection the minute it was released (and subsequently gave away my individual season dvd sets), but didn’t get the Angel box set until just recently, and that was only because it was 50 bucks at Amazon. In re-watching both shows lately, I realized that I made the right decision. Buffy was just more to my liking, the one I can re-watch without resenting every single character (seasons 3 and 4 of Angel, anyone?).
Okay, I actually agree with Sebastian on something. I never thought this day would come ;-)
Yes, season 4 of Angel was a disaster pretty much from beginning to end. Season 3 was not as bad in my opinion, yes it had problems, but there were redeeming qualities as well, but I could totally be happy pretending season 4 never happened. Then, as S said, Spike came in and saved the day (or at least the show).
True, Buffy never had an entire season go quite so far off the rails, but for me, I still choose Angel. And Sebastian, even though it kind of hurts at the end, you should definitely watch the last 6 eps of Angel. There is some really great #%@* in there!
I can’t choose between the two. Right now I am mid-way through Season 6 of Buffy. It’s been long enough most episodes feel like watching for the first time. After I finish the Buffy series, it’ll be time to relive the Angel boxed set.
I do own the entirety of both series, but if it really came down to it, I’d choose Buffy. Like Saya, I’m a huge fan of Giles. (While I don’t remember clearly, I may in fact have started watching Buffy because I’d fallen in love with Anthony Stewart Head on VR-5.) Still, I really like the first season of Angel (less enthusiastic about the rest of it), so if someone came to take away my Angel DVDs I might have to switch those discs with the ones from one of the later seasons of Buffy which I didn’t enjoy as much.
