Last week’s Idol was so disappointing, I didn’t have high hopes for group 2. Thankfully, some of them stepped up their game and made it a lot of fun! I’m talking to you, Adam Lambert. I wasn’t sure about him singing the Rolling Stones, but he totally kicked ass by rocking the high notes and giving a seriously memorable performance.
Oh, and all of you teenyboppers in denial, this guy is Gay with a capital G. If you didn’t get that from his gushing about how much he loves Twilight, here’s a video. Sorry to crush your dreams — wait, no I’m not. If you decide you don’t like him anymore because of that, well I’ll just end this sentence before I start name-calling.
Alison Iraheta completely surprised me with her rendition of Heart’s “Alone.” I thought I’d be sick of hearing Idol contestants sing that song, but she just about nailed it. She had maybe one iffy moment through the entire thing, but if you’ve ever been to an actual concert, you know everyone has off-key moments, even singing their own songs. The great thing about Alison is that when she’s singing, she’s “in the zone.” I totally believed her afterward when she said she didn’t even know what had just happened.
Megan Corkrey was also pretty impressive when I didn’t expect her to be. I don’t think “Put Your Records On” was a great choice, but I would love to hear this girl sing some ska. She’s kind of awkward and dorkey, but in an endearing way. Her tat sleeve is pretty sweet too. Combine all of those things and you get this very interesting, eclectic person, which is why I hope she sticks around because I want to know what she does next.
I know Debbie doesn’t share my feelings, but I just adore Nick Mitchell/Normund Gentle. After seven seasons of this show, I’m glad to have someone to enjoy watching just for the sheer fun of it. He’s probably done after tonight, but it was awesome while it lasted. I just wish the rumors were true and he sang “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” I wouldn’t say I’d give my right eye to see that, but definitely one of my toes or maybe an ear. I could cover up the lack of either of those things with shoes or my hair.
The problem with this setup is all the bad singers could be from week 1, yet three of them still go and week two could have 10 of the best singers, but it doesn’t matter. It’s not about votes this year but the luck of what group you are in.
Well hopefully that’s where the Wild Card round will come in to play. If the judges pick the truly best singers from all three rounds to come back, then you can survive being in a stronger group and still have your chance. won’t do much to make it fair if a whole group sucks and three from there have to go through.
I’m counting on the wild card round, too. What I like a lot about this format is that we only have to hear the painful singers once, then buh-bye. It’s awful having them come back week after week, dying a slow death while we struggle to keep our Waterford crystal in one piece.
What I don’t like about it is how can you make sure the groups are equitable? Week 1 had 2 shoe-ins and not a lot of contenders for the third spot; last night, I have no idea who’s going through, beyond Adam, and there are too many mediocre people it could be. I miss my Michael Johns….

It was nice to see him last week, wasn’t it? He said he has an album coming out right? Adam is definitely through, my guess is that Allison is the top girl and we’ll probably get a guy for the next spot again. I just hope its not Matt Breitzke! One down home hard labor country boy that doesn’t sing very well is enough for me.
The thing about the wild card that sucks is now they’re saying it could be people that got eliminated BEFORE the top 36. Good for Jamar fans I guess but I don’t like it much. I mean come on, they’re the ones who cut those people, why bring them back?
Yeah, that does suck. The wild card should come from the top 36.
Now our DVR (read:Keith!) messed up last night so we missed Alison and one other performance, so I can’t root for her ’cause I’m not in the know. I liked I think it was Melissa or maybe Meghan with the tattooed arm and also the one who did “Bette Davis Eyes”… Jesse? I can’t think of any other guys that I’d want to see go through from last night.
Like paula said, adam’s performance was like a concert, a bit too overdone, but still fantastic (compared to some other bad performances of the night). Allison was the best that i’ve seen (and heard) her last night, she sang like it was grand finale (Whoa).Megan had a perfect song choice like kara said, but if you really listen closely to megan’s voice, it’s a bit shaky and inconsistent. Mishavonna had a bad song choice (Drops of Jupiter: It’s just not the type of song that you could translate into a “winning piece” no matter how well you sing it), but her great voice still did justice to that song, the judges could have at least credited her for singing it exquisitely well. Kris has a great voice, but he didn’t really seem to “give it his all”. Anyway, my top 3 are adam, allison, and yes, still mishavonna! (It’s ok if others don’t agree:)
