“Call me crazy, but child actors were way better back in the ’80s.” — Barney
The theme of acting ran throughout the episode tonight on How I Met Your Mother. I’ve got a couple of observations, and a couple of questions.
Lily has been acting for 12 years, pretending she likes Marshall’s mother; then, she fixes it with Marshall by acting like she’s on the phone with her (it’s really “Betty”). So is acting all that bad? It made Marshall happy for 12 years when he thought Lily liked his mom, and then it made him happy again when she faked the phone call.
It’s pretty funny that while Barney had all the actors pretending to be his family, Barney’s mother was acting like she liked them. And another layer that she couldn’t stand his “fake” friends … priceless. The acting didn’t work as well in this case. Barney’s mom was actually pretty “real” and I think she doesn’t need it as much as Marshall does.
Ted’s always wanted to be an actor? Really? His performance reminded me of the old Jon Lovitz SNL skit, “Acting!” I know it was supposed to be over-the-top, but the real question is are they going somewhere with this? I think probably not, but Keith was wondering if we’d see Ted’s acting bug pop up again. Hmmm….
Did you enjoy Robin bonding with Grant? I thought it was funny that she found career validation from a punk kid, but it went too far for me when the kid tried to kiss her. And “Tyler no likey?” No funny.
A few other things:
I liked tonight’s episode, specifically the dynamic between Ted and Betty (Totally missed the Barney and Betty connection :( ).
Lilly and Marshall on the Racecar bed :)
Not a great episode of HIMYM, but still good. The thing I didn’t like about last night is that it really didn’t do much to move the storyline of the show forward any. I’m hoping that it’s intention was to introduce some new storylines such as the feud between Lilly and Marshall’s mom, Robin’s new job, Ted and the actress, and of course Barney and Robin.

But if every show was about finding out who the mother was, getting Robin and Barney together, or finding what the frak is up with the goat, then everyone would have stopped watching years ago.
Am I mistaken or did I also hear a few bars of Doogie scene transition music after Barney made that comment about 80s child actors?

Nope, you heard it! I love the Doogie shout-outs they’ve been including.
The Karate Kid bit was outstanding.
I laughed a couple of times but frankly not as much as I laughed about Two and A Half Men.
I feel dirty.
Let’s pretend we are Robin and now know that Barney’s mom is a dirty whore and that Barney sleeps around with women as if they were napkins.
I am soooo interested in how they are going to get those two together. If I were Robin I’d demand four blood tests each 4 weeks apart before poking Barney with a stick but that’s just me…
I think based on Robin’s parents (or father at least), judging others for how/what their parents are wouldn’t be the best call, and she’d be above that.
That’s just me.
