Supernatural season five – The best season yet?

Since I’ve caught up on Supernatural through my Diary of a Supernatural Virgin, I can’t help but have mixed feelings. I love that I’ll be watching in “real time” this season, but I loathe that I’ll be waiting for episodes with the rest of you rabid Supernatural fans. It’s just not right to make us wait … but wait we must — only until Thursday, September 10, though!

That doesn’t stop some of us (read: me!) from searching for every little scrap we can find about the season that’s to come. I went spoiler-free for so long so that I could give an honest reaction in my virgin diary, that I think now I’m overcompensating. OK, I exaggerate a bit, but a few tidbits I’ve read have got me speculating — a lot — about season five, and if it is possible for it to be the best season of Supernatural yet.

What’s up with Bobby in season five? Jim Beaver spills the beans, and says there’s a Bobby-twist coming that will affect his relationship with the boys. Now for a little speculating … is Bobby their real father? Nah. Could it be revealed that somehow Bobby betrayed John in some way — an affair with Mary perhaps? Not necessarily a reveal; maybe something happens, like Bobby gets possessed, quits the hunting life, sides with Lucifer … I dunno. What could be so huge that the boys don’t have the same rapport with their father figure?

I’m no Lostie, but I’m nevertheless intrigued by the casting of Mark Pellegrino as the sympathetic Lucifer (’cause I am a Dexter fan). Leave it to Supernatural to try to make you like the Devil. It will be interesting to watch, since I was pretty lukewarm on the angels — a very purposeful plot device to set us up for season five, obviously. Kripke, you the man.

So who’s back besides Bobby and the boys? [Spoiler Fix]

  • Demon Meg — Will I still hate Meg? I’m betting on … oh yeah.
  • Chuck the Prophet — big yay; I always wondered why Chuck was so underutilized. Hopefully Sam and Dean will use the dude to stay one step ahead of, you know, the apocalypse.
  • Castiel — though he was pretty much destroyed, so it will be interesting to see how he comes back. But he does come back with his own agenda … “Save the humans, save the world?”
  • Anna — Dean’s set for some repeat angel-lovin’, perhaps.
  • Jessica — Yeah, the dead fiance. How’s that going to play out? I’m wondering if she’s somehow a follower of Lucifer. That would be interesting. She’s around, if you remember, since Sam saw her as an apparition in season one.

Can all these elements add up to the best season yet? I’m going out on a limb, taking a big risk here and saying … probably. Season four toed that line pretty well, but I got a bit nervous in the middle, so I’m not willing to put all my eggs in Kripke’s basket, so to speak. There’s not a show that I am looking more forward to than Supernatural this season, and I think it has all the potential to tell a story that’s never been told from this angle before. Bring it on, Kripke!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I LOVE THIS SHOW! I’m more concerned now about:
(1) Will this be the final season since it was always intended as a five year story?
(2) Can they continue the adventures of the Winchester brothers beyond the conclusion of this season without totally destroying the arc that has been so carefully constructed to play out over five seasons?

I hate to think about no more adventures after this season, but I don’t want them to drag it out until it becomes a tired joke. So many mixed feelings about what may or may not be, but I will be watching to see how this all plays out this season!

What I’ve read — out of the mouth of Kripke — is that if there is a 6th season, he will end the 5 season arc and start a new one, much like Buffy did every season. So just a new Big Bad, I guess, with the Winchester boys and all their greatness intact. I’ll take it! :-)

Mo Ryan from the Chicago Tribune and Matt Roush from TV Guide Magazine have recently caught up on Supernatural. In fact Matt Roush said it was his best decision of the year. With all of the tv these two TV critics could or should be watching they chose Supernatural – so I think the perception in the industry is that this show is going to be fantastic in season five. I can’t wait!

Can’t wait for the return of supernatural, and hopefully these will not be the last season, if the series continues i trust 100% the witers of these series to make it great, even when they had fought the ultimate baddy in these season.
