The finale of So You Think You Can Dance gave us “everything and a bag of chips,” to quote choreographer Tyce DiOrio.
Judge montages. Baseball. Freakin’ clowns. National Dance Day. Nigel Lithgoe, doling out the cheese. Seven-year-old tap dancers. Another review of a smoldering Pasha and Lauren. The riveting Fix You routine once more. We were even treated to a performance by a departed American Idol judge, Ellen DeGeneres, doing an encore performance of Lil’ Jon and LMFAO’s “Outta Your Mind” (the routine originally performed and hailed by injured Alex Wong and all-star Twitch).
We even got treated to an on-screen kiss from the guy who presented Robert’s floral arrangement when he was announced as the third place winner in the competition. (What was up with that?) And on. And on. And on. Truly, a “greatest hits” for the SYTYCD finale.
And, in the end, we got what I’ve been predicting for weeks — the true winner of the competition: Lauren Froderman.
The full-of-vim-and-vigor contemporary jazz dancer did it all throughout the season, no matter the style she was presented with. She didn’t just weather the performances or go through the motions — she killed them. She attacked the routines and gave them the worth — in this reviewer’s opinion — that the choreographers originally had in mind for them. Without doubt, Lauren deserved the win.
Not to take away anything from Kent Boyd, the runner-up of the competition. Over the last few weeks, we’ve really seen him come out of his shell and blossom. And not only into the true performer we always knew he was, but as a prime artist as well.
Congratulations, Lauren. It was a privilege to watch you dance on that stage.
Yeeeees!
wasn’t adam the guy with the flowers???
*POST AUTHOR*
. . . . .
“Adam” as in “Shankman”, the judge Adam Shankman?
No. The gentleman that handed the flowers to Robert was dressed in a grey-ish suit. Adam Shankman had a black suit on …
As expected Lauren won. I think she was an undeserving winning but quite in the SYTYCD style. I don’t know if killing a choreo makes it for me. Doing the steps? sure but she wasn’t brilliant in any of her choreos.
Brilliant were Billy or Kent or Alex or their partners in the good choreos. But she wasn’t. Her choreos were regular ones, not :O factor.
Her tango , not good (lack of leg work).
Her hiphop , poor twitch ate her all the way.
Her contemporary , uhm … was there any?
So , good for her , but Robert was the best dancer tonight and he placed third. He won’t have any trouble getting dance gigs for sure. Kent has a lot to grow but technically he is very good, so he is on track. Lauren, imo , is the worst of the three and the one with worse chances of making it. Her body is bulky , she isn’t camera friendly (at least not dancing) although she is cute while on rehersal.
Thank God Kent did not win! So happy!
