The Glades – Throw a little honey in the pot

Episodes ago, when Jim said he was an expert in all things homicidal, he wasn't being arrogant. He was letting us know he lacked expertise in all other areas of his life. Being stuck between Callie and Josie drove that point home.

- Season 1, Episode 9 - "Honey"

The Glades - Honey

Thirty minutes into the episode and I was certain “Honey” referred Callie. Turns out I was wrong and it was a guitar, but I think my interpretation was spot on. I’ve mentioned before that The Glades is Matt Passmore. The more I watch, the less interesting the cases become, and I now realize this is more about a man growing up than it is a crime procedural. It’s telling in the intro that Jim says he came to Florida to escape his sexual escapades and a shot in the ass for the laid back culture of Miami. Now that he’s there, police work isn’t his purpose.

It wasn’t interesting, but the case of the week introduced a new fly in the ointment: an easy-on-the-eyes tribal police detective named Josie (Morgan Hewitt). When Callie meets her, Josie tells her she and Jim are working together. Callie mutters under her breath, “Yeah, that’s how it starts.” This wasn’t just an aside, but proof that she thinks of herself as just some honey girl for Jim to play with. Her husband is in jail, she’s falling for a new guy and has zero confidence. She uses Josie as an excuse for her to “break up” with Jim again, even though they aren’t officially dating. Jim is a complete smart ass when on the job, but he wears his heart on his sleeve. Struggling unsuccessfully for words, he was crushed.

Callie’s ego gets another blow when she drops by to see Jim (in spite of the fact she just told him they could no longer be friends … no wonder men can be so confused) and is greeted by the gorgeous Det. Josie, swigging a beer and feeling at home. Jim tries to explain what she sees, but it’s too late. How much they really like each other is embedded in these scenes because you can tell they are written by someone who has been there. You really can’t make up the topsy-turvy relationship they’re writing. It’s too real and acted brilliantly by Passmore and Kiele Sanchez.

The Glades is Jim learning to care for someone other than himself, and Callie realizing she deserves better than a common criminal. Just as Jim warms to the idea that he has no idea what Callie wants, she shows up poolside and launches herself at him for a passionate kiss. “That. That’s what I want.”  Once again, Jim is left speechless, a state he is only beginning to understand.
