Desperate Housewives – Season 7 is a blast from the past

The season got off to a slow start, but some exciting new cast members and some returning favorites should kick the show back into gear. I hope.

- Season 7, Episode 1 - "Remember Paul?"

Season seven of Desperate Housewives got off to kind of a slow start this week, but considering it ended the last season with more of a whimper than a bang I guess that’s no surprise. The show took a bold step of flash forwarding five years into the future two seasons ago, and with this episode it seems like they’re trying to take everything back seven … or twelve years. It’s all very confusing.

Having been a faithful viewer since the beginning, it gave me a little thrill to see the flashbacks with Rex and Mary Alice, and now that Paul Young is back on Wisteria Lane I’m sure there will be some new drama involving him. I am also a huge fan of Harriet Sansom Harris so I hope she plays a large role in the Paul Young storyline even if her character is in jail. And Lainie Kazan! I love Lainie Kazan! Listening her to spout off the internet hosting mumbo-jumbo was hilarious but she carried it off like a pro. But do people really pay big bucks to see women in lingerie doing housecleaning?

I’m sorry to see Orson (Kyle MacLachlan) leaving the show, at least as a regular. I thought when things were good between Orson and Bree, MacLachlan and Marcia Cross had such great chemistry and the characters were just perfect together. But I won’t complain about Bree’s impending fling with the hot new handyman played by Brian Austin Green. It’ll be nice to see her come out of her shell again. I really liked Bree when she was fooling around with Carl, before his untimely death, because she was less uptight so now it’s time for Bree to cut loose again.

Unfortunately, Bree’s newfound openness is going to have a devastating effect on Gaby and Carlos. Now that she has revealed to Gaby that Andrew was responsible for the hit and run death of Carlos’ mother, Gaby would prefer to keep it a secret to preserve her happy life. That happiness will be short-lived, I’m afraid, as Gaby learns her oldest daughter Juanita really isn’t hers. It’s all becoming a bit more soapy than it should, but hopefully the arrival of Lynette’s best friend in the form of Vanessa Williams will give things a swift kick in the pants. Right now she is stuck with the jilted wife storyline (yawn) so I hope they let her go all Wilhelmina Slater on Wisteria Lane, and fast! This episode took a lot of time setting things up, so I’m looking forward to this slow burn yielding some explosive payoffs.
