I’ve been playing catch-up on a few weeks worth of Weeds, and as the Botwins have continued to spiral further and further downward, I’ve found myself enjoying season six more and more. I’m not so sure I’ll ever look at Saved by the Bell the same way after Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s guest stint, but that’s bound to happen now and again with our favorite childhood shows (and really, wasn’t it forever changed by Elizabeth Berkley and Tiffani Thiessen anyway?).
I’m not only liking everything connected to the Jesus RV, but I’m thrilled that Doug is around, and Silas and Shane spending time together is something to behold. And Andy’s been holding his own pretty well opposite Nancy.
Of all the things to come back to this season, I love that Richard Dreyfuss is appearing as the high school math teacher Nancy may or may not have lost her virginity to (I’m going to say yes). His Warren Schiff is deliciously crazy, and his appearance has given me flashes of Albert Brooks, who was phenomenal as Andy’s father Lenny. I’m really excited to find out what (or who) is behind the locked door at the end of the hall.
If this show weren’t offensive enough as is, Andy’s trip to the local mosque to scout out fake passports probably pushed it over the edge. I loved his purple yoga mat, how he tried to establish a contact, and how he got screwed in the end. Great manner of getting rid of the RV by Doug and Andy as well.
The Lars (Rick Ravanello) plot was an interesting one. I mean, who hasn’t wondered how Silas and Shane ended up as brothers? I’m hoping they don’t spend too much time on it (and that we don’t learn that Silas was fathered by Lars), but I’m looking forward to a certain amount of exploration of the topic.
I pegged Ellis (Eric Lange) as a potential avenue for selling hash, not someone who was looking for Nancy and family. The question now is who he’s working for (on this show it can’t be a given that he’s working for the FBI), but either way someone who was looking for them has located them. Shane, you’re needed!
The drink Andy created and Nancy sold to Hooman Jaka (Assaf Cohen, best known for playing Yair Marx on Entourage) sounds insane — hash, grain alcohol, Red Bull, and meth. I think Andy and Nancy should have waited to see if Doug had a heart attack before pushing the drug on an unsuspecting public. I detect danger ahead.
Danger and good times. I’ve tried to think about where this show would be good, and the truth is that it doesn’t seem to matter. As screwed up as the people may be, Weeds is about family. Their setting only affects how they respond to the world around them, but they’ll always be the same people no matter where they’re living. Want to go to Copenhagen? Okay. As long as they locate a source for passports, why not? Granted the farther afield they drift the harder it is to explain Doug’s presence, but if that’s the only obstacle….
By the way, the biggest surprise of the season for me? Learning that Bob Degon watches the show.
