Bob:
The Golden Globe awards are coming up, and while they don’t hold quite as much weight as the Emmys, they are still fun to talk about. I’m excited this year by the return of Ricky Gervais, who I love. He didn’t pull any punches last year, and I’m sure he won’t this year either. Good times.
Onto the awards themselves, though. The only drama nominated that I don’t watch is Dexter, so I can’t really discuss that, but I was happy to see the rest of the nominees singled out (Boardwalk Empire, The Good Wife, Mad Men, and The Walking Dead). I feel like with only six episodes, The Walking Dead doesn’t quite have enough to claim the title (yet). The Globes do have a history of awarding the up-and-comers or the underdog, so I wouldn’t be shocked if it won. As boring of a pick as it may be, I have to go with Mad Men as my winner. I swear, this fourth season was the best season yet and it remains the best show on television.
On the Musical/Comedy side, I would be shocked if Glee didn’t win. It wouldn’t be my choice of a winner, but the Globes historically love musicals for some reason. It won the award last year, and I expect it to take it home again. I think all five of the other nominees are more deserving, but I would love to see 30 Rock, Modern Family, or The Big Bang Theory take the prize.
What are your picks?
Debbie:
The Golden Globes are my favorite awards show … I’m sure it has something to do with all of the attendees drinking at their tables….
The fact that The Good Wife is the only network show nominated for best drama is yet another thing that makes me regret not watching it and sadly, the only nominee that I do watch is Dexter, which I adore but don’t expect to win this year. If it didn’t win last year, when Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow did, I don’t know why it would win this year — though it would be great to see Julia Stiles get the win because she was amazing this season.
Out of the nominees for comedy, I’d have to go with Modern Family, although I think Community should really be the winner. That poor, clever, overlooked show….
Bob:
Honestly, I find it strange that Community has been so ignored. It seems like it’s just off beat and “boutique” enough that it would garner some attention from the awards shows. Sometimes certain excellent shows just get overlooked. I still don’t understand how The Wire got ignored during it’s run. It was one of the best shows to ever be on television, and just about anyone who watched the show will tell you that.
Debbie:
Yeah, and conversely, just because an awards show recognizes a TV series doesn’t mean it’s any good. Oh, and here we are, back at Glee. I know, mean dig, but for a show that started out with so much promise, it’s really taken a dive; so much so that Keith and I got 5-10 minutes into the Christmas episode and deleted it from the DVR … it was intolerable.
It just feels good when a favorite show is recognized as good, though, doesn’t it? Maybe it somehow validates our TV watching choices, or maybe it’s that same adrenaline rush that happens when your football team wins (and no, Brett, I’m not thinking of the Seahawks….) and you’re kind of like, “I told you so.”
Bob:
I don’t know, my ego is so over inflated that I usually just think I’m smarter than everyone else when I like a show and others don’t.
What are your picks for the Golden Globes?
Please be mean to Glee all you want, after all its the most overrated thing on TV. I’d like Modern Family to win over it and Mad Men deserves to win. I liked Boardwalk Empire, but not as much as Mad Men. For movies I just have one pick: Black Swan.
Overall though there is one reason to really watch the Golden Globes: Ricky Gervais
