Really, the biggest release of the week is probably the latest set from Jersey Shore. Unfortunately (or fortunately, you make the call), the entirety of my Jersey Shore knowledge comes from the bits I have seen on The Soup. That’s more than enough to tell me it’s not my thing. If it’s yours, well there you go. New set. Elsewhere, Showtime gets on the board with two offerings in Shamelss and The Borgias. Both have been well received, and if you don’t have Showtime, the DVDs are worth a look.
That is, worth a look after you have seen the pick of the week, Archer. It is, quite simply, outstanding. As you would expect, given the title, the show does focus on the world’s best-worst spy, Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin). But what makes the show truly great is the supporting cast of characters. With the rest of season three coming up in January, all of the supporting characters are now very well defined, and have great backstories. And they are such an off-the-wall collection of motivations, insecurities, and psychoses that they are endlessly fascinating to watch. And funny. They are all completely hilarious.
As a bonus for the Arrested Development fans in the house, the show also features Jessica Walter, Jeffrey Tambor, David Cross, and Judy Greer. There is even the occasional reference back to AD. And while we’re talking about AD, you should also take a peek at Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, which features David Cross and Will Arnett.
