Royal Pains – Trouble in paradise?

USA's smash hit returned from a lengthy hiatus with a fun episode that served up one resolution, one interesting medical case, and a new development that may affect the rest of the series.

- Season 3, Episode 11 - "A Farewell to Barnes"

Royal Pains

LL Cool J said it best when he mentioned in a rap song that paradise is very nice. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t know. The closest I’ve ever been to it was when Stella decided to get her groove back in the late nineties. I really should get out more. Still, that certainly doesn’t stop me from leaving the confines of my living room and traveling to South Hampton with Dr. Hank Lawson whenever the USA network airs an episode of Royal Pains. It’s good to have an imagination, right?

Ah, what is it about this show that I enjoy so much?

Is it the sunny locations or the compelling medical cases? Or is it the happy-go-lucky characters and witty humor? Whatever it is, all of the above were on display in the mid-season premiere, and I couldn’t have been happier. To that end, let’s kick this recap off by discussing the resolution of the cliffhanger established in the last episode.

When we last left the sun-drenched Hamptons, a sick patient (played by guest star Wilmer Valderrama) was mistakenly given the wrong drugs by Divya. So, what’s his fate? Did he kick the bucket? Rest assured, guys. He survived. However, Divya’s conscious is really beginning to weigh on her, and she ended the episode deciding to resign. Despite it being a big issue, I kind of think she was being a bit hard on herself. I mean, he did accept her apology. How was she supposed to know that he was diabetic?

You see, reasons like this are why I majored in journalism as opposed to studying pharmacy. The money may be good, but I don’t need someone’s fate in my hands. I digress.

Hank was back to doing his usual thing which meant he was on board to solve the customary medical situation of the week. This one was pretty fun. It involved an event planner who seemed to be having a rather unique anxiety attack. After keeping an eye on her at the event — an amusing divorce ceremony involving a husband and wife eager to date other people — Hank was able to successfully decipher her symptoms and discover what it was that she was suffering from … something slightly worse than anxiety, an illness that I won’t even bother trying to pronounce or type. Needless to say, he saved her. How does Hank know everything about everything?

Inquiring minds want to know. I’d be one of them. Feel free to answer that question below.

In other news, Evan stood up for himself. After playing golf with Paige’s father, he told the old man how he really felt about some things, which, in turn, prompted the father of the bride-to-be to withdraw his blessing. Still, that didn’t stop Paige from proposing to Evan. Hey, it’s 2012, right? It turns out that she doesn’t care what daddy says. She just wants her man. Well, go ‘head, sistah’!

And while I’m busy offering congratulatory props, I think Evan deserves one as well. It was nice to see him develop a backbone. Go, Evan! It was also nice to see Hank and Jill together. What’s your opinion on that? Feel free to discuss, and while you’re at it, here’s something else to ponder … what do you think is going to happen to Divya? She broke the news to Hank regarding her mistake during the final minute, and he didn’t exactly seem jovial. Something tells me that there’s going to be trouble in paradise. I want your thoughts! Sound off below!

Jill and Hank broke up yet again? This is getting ridiculous. Evan and Paige are no longer cute. They are boring. No couple is that perfect. The whole diabetes story was a joke. Eric just happened to “forget” to tell Divya he was diabetic when he had never forgotten to tell doctors before? And to imply that all doctors make mistakes because they are “Too tired” is absurd. all doctors work long hours and double shifts and they don’t make mistakes like this. Finally we are to believe that Eric who has had diabetes for years could not tell his blood sugar was too high?
The episode was a joke. Not to mention the insult to Mormons. How offensive. Polygamists are not mormons. There is a difference.

Well, that’s the thing about these kinds of show, Nancy… they are just meant to entertain. And that’s it. Still, I found the episode to be fun despite having moments where I’d be like, “Oh, this would never happen in real life!” LOL Yes, the diabetes story was a bit absurd, but it did create some nice drama for Divya. That’s television of course!
