The Vampire Diaries is likely the only show that can rip my heart out and fake me out in the same scene. Do you know how hard it is to gasp when the tears are flowing and all that mucous is in the way? I nearly choked myself. … But all the gasping aside, Alaric still may not be long for this series, and so I mourn. Matt Davis is the lead in the CW’s Cult pilot (I’ll watch him and Alona Tal any day), and although I’d like to believe this article that quotes Julie Plec as wanting Alaric around forever and Matt Davis saying The CW is allowing him to do two shows … well, I just don’t see how he’s getting out of this one, and I don’t want evil Alaric around for good. Hopefully I have mourned for nothing; Alaric is worth a little unwanted mucous.
Wait, I’m not done. The reason “Do Not Go Gentle” had me hook, line and sinker was because the scene where Alaric is locking himself in the house and he sees everyone outside, just standing there, honoring him … oh, it was so beautiful. Everything about it, from the cinematography to the look on each and every person’s face was mesmerizing. How can so many people act the hell out of a wordless scene? And then, when Damon went in and spent Alaric’s last moments with him? Their friendship really is something special.
Seeing Matt and Jeremy together again was poignant, because they both have changed so much since their last bromantic moments. They are both stronger, more accepting of the life they are stuck in, for better or for worse, and neither is running away anymore. The last of the humans (I guess Elena and Meredith are still human, but they both are much more connected to the supernatural world and lifestyle than Matt and Jeremy), they are going to fight right alongside their supernatural compadres without hesitation. That’s a big step for them both.
I’m still rooting for Elena and Stefan. Their love is pure, supportive, no strings attached. That’s the kind of love that lasts. Damon may challenge Elena, but I’m not sure their love could ever be as strong and accepting as Elena and Stefan’s. The way they look at each other is love, not lust. He corsaged her, for crying out loud, and I loved the “dangerous dance karma” line. It’s not just that they have more history than Damon and Elena — they have unconditional love. With Damon, there would always be conditions.
This and that:
