The Vampire Diaries – How’s Alaric going to get out of this one?

I've got to have faith that 'The Vampire Diaries' have not backed themselves into an unsolvable situation. I sit here typing, a difficult feat while on this emotional roller-coaster, hoping that the writers have a plan. If this episode was any indication, the last two episodes of season three are going to be epic.

- Season 3, Episode 20 - "Do Not Go Gentle"

The Vampire Diaries is likely the only show that can rip my heart out and fake me out in the same scene. Do you know how hard it is to gasp when the tears are flowing and all that mucous is in the way? I nearly choked myself. … But all the gasping aside, Alaric still may not be long for this series, and so I mourn. Matt Davis is the lead in the CW’s Cult pilot (I’ll watch him and Alona Tal any day), and although I’d like to believe this article that quotes Julie Plec as wanting Alaric around forever and Matt Davis saying The CW is allowing him to do two shows … well, I just don’t see how he’s getting out of this one, and I don’t want evil Alaric around for good. Hopefully I have mourned for nothing; Alaric is worth a little unwanted mucous.

Wait, I’m not done. The reason “Do Not Go Gentle” had me hook, line and sinker was because the scene where Alaric is locking himself in the house and he sees everyone outside, just standing there, honoring him … oh, it was so beautiful. Everything about it, from the cinematography to the look on each and every person’s face was mesmerizing. How can so many people act the hell out of a wordless scene? And then, when Damon went in and spent Alaric’s last moments with him? Their friendship really is something special.

Seeing Matt and Jeremy together again was poignant, because they both have changed so much since their last bromantic moments. They are both stronger, more accepting of the life they are stuck in, for better or for worse, and neither is running away anymore. The last of the humans (I guess Elena and Meredith are still human, but they both are much more connected to the supernatural world and lifestyle than Matt and Jeremy), they are going to fight right alongside their supernatural compadres without hesitation. That’s a big step for them both.

I’m still rooting for Elena and Stefan. Their love is pure, supportive, no strings attached. That’s the kind of love that lasts. Damon may challenge Elena, but I’m not sure their love could ever be as strong and accepting as Elena and Stefan’s. The way they look at each other is love, not lust. He corsaged her, for crying out loud, and I loved the “dangerous dance karma” line. It’s not just that they have more history than Damon and Elena — they have unconditional love. With Damon, there would always be conditions.

This and that:

  • I know, I’m mentioning it again; this is the last time, and then I’ll let it go, but writing Alaric out of this show would be a very bad decision. There would be essentially no adults left (Mrs. Lockwood and the sheriff I guess) and the show would lose some of its appeal. I know that most of the characters are now of age, but I still think we need to balance out the Scooby gang with a mentor … remember when Giles went MIA? Buffy was not as good without him.
  • Klaus is still unaware that there’s an indestructable stake, right?
  • You think Meredith and Damon could become the next hot couple? They have an interesting flirtation.
  • I almost don’t even want to mar this post with mention of Bonnie and Jamie, but I feel I must. Yuck, no chemistry. If we have to see Bonnie with anyone, let it be Jeremy. But a great solution to the whole Alaric problem would be for Bonnie to do a spell to switch places with him so that she’s the one to die. I’m just not moved by her character.
  • I’m almost over Klaus and Caroline, but Tyler needs to get over himself and be the guy from the reunion, pre-jealousy.
  • Now, we know it wasn’t the ring that made Alaric mad; it was Esther, brainwashing him during his deaths. Think we’ve seen the last of her? Of Rebekah?
