Bob’s Burgers – When was the last time you had your pillows fluffed?

Is it possible 'Bob's Burgers' is getting funnier as the season progresses? Well ... anything's possible. But, in this case, it happens to be true - the show is progressing nicely right before our very eyes.

- Season 2, Episode 8 - "Dr. Yap"

I know it’s just a cartoon, but … every single story line worked. (And really: Who gives a rat’s ass if it’s “just a cartoon” … ?!?? An equal amount of blood, sweat and tears is injected into Bob’s Burgers the same as any other show — sitcom, drama or otherwise.)

Case in point: You have your primary presentation with the main players in the game. Add two or three (sometimes more) secondary side tales with a couple co-stars, work everything into the mix so it make sense to the viewing audience and cram it all together in a 22-minute slot. Hey … that’s daunting stuff right there, Bobo. Tough enough to do with live actors, but in two dimensions? More power to you if you can pull something like that off.

That’s one of the reasons I take my hat off to this show week in and week out. Or any other consistent show out there in TVLand.

Let’s see how many different shenanigans the good folks at Bob’s Burgers tossed into “Dr. Yap” … shall we?

  1. Bob’s dental visit which ended up going horribly wrong.
  2. Linda’s sister Gayle’s unexpected appearance.
  3. The introduction of Gayle’s jawbreaker. (And yes, that was an entire story in and of itself where, primarily, Gene and Louise were concerned.
  4. Dr. Yap and his attempted woo-ery of Gayle.
  5. Linda’s ongoing feud with Gayle.
  6. Tina’s unrequited love affair with Dr. Yap. (Tina does have quite a few kinks going on when it comes to l-o-v-e, doesn’t she? Zombies, Jimmy Jr., sexy dance fighting instructors, Dr. Yap … the list continues to grow.)

Hello! Let’s see another cartoon cram all that in, stay hilarious and make sense!

Look: I know I can be overly swoony about Bob’s Burgers at times. But it doesn’t blind me to the fact the efforts The Powers That Be put into this series episode after episode or that, sometimes, those efforts come up short. There are instances when a chapter is firing on all thrusters, other times not. (And I’ve scowled at a few of the Bob’s installments. I know they can’t all be gems.)

But this episode worked through and through. Plus, there’s one undeniable thing we can all agree on with regard to “Dr. Yap”:

“Kissing your sister” is an awesome euphemism …

Notes:

  • “Dr. Yap.” Great name for a dentist … don’t you think?
  • Who would have ever thought Linda was capable of such innovative reverse psychology? When it came to fooling her sister, I would have never thought she had it in her.
  • Bob’s Burger Of The Day: “It’s Fun To Eat At The rYeMCA Burger” — Burger on rye with mustard, cheese and avocado.

Quotes:

“It’s been a long time since I’ve had my pillows fluffed …” — Bob’s sister-in-law Gayle as Bob feels her up while under heavy sedation

“Got any plans this weekend?” — Dr. Yap
“Well, I have a family … so … I don’t make any plans.” — Bob

“We shovel snow in our pants! The first one to give up, get hypothermia or die … loses!” — Louise to Gene
