“How many desiccated hybrids does it take to screw in a light bulb?” – Damon
Wow. Tonight’s episode certainly set up a lot of questions heading into the finale: Is Klaus lying about the bloodline — do Stefan and Damon really descend from him? Will Alaric try to kill Elena to end his own life? What will The Council do to the mayor and the sheriff? Who will Elena choose, Stefan or Damon? And the burning question, the one that’s going to keep me up at night, waiting desperately for the finale: How many desiccated hybrids does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
I’m looking for the clever way that the old Alaric is going to make it back … and I just can’t seem to problem-solve that one. They aren’t likely to do the desiccation spell on him now that they used it on Klaus, which is a good thing; I really need the old Alaric back and the bottom of the Atlantic is definitely the wrong way to go. He’ll likely have to stay a vampire, even if he gets his humanity back. Bonnie can make him a daylight ring, but what about all those steps in-between? What’s going to be the impetus — will it be a spell, or will something touch his heart so deeply that he’ll right his wrongs?
You’ve got to feel for Elena. Having to choose between two brothers is crappy enough to begin with, but when she said, “If I choose one of you, I lose the other and I’ve lost so many people. I can’t bear the thought of losing one of you,” it really hit home what this choice means to her. The incredible amounts of loss she has suffered, and really, she’s only gotten stronger for it (unlike Bonnie, who just gets bitchier). How will she choose, and how will she handle only having one Salvatore brother in her life?
It was nice to end the tension of this episode with a good, old-fashioned high school drinking party, because I have a feeling the tension of next week’s episode will trump this one tenfold.

*SPOILERS FROM BOOK AHEAD*
Okay, my money is on Elena getting turned in the next episode. That may seem like a random conclusion to draw for someone who hasn’t read the books, but if you have, you know exactly where I am coming from. I know the plot of the show has differed form the books in a HUGE way, but still, all the major plot points–the love triangle, the history of the brothers (altered yes, but basically the same), Catherine, Klaus, Matt, Alaric, Tyler and his family being werewolves–have come right out of the books. The only major plot point we are missing… Elena being forced off the bridge in her car and drowning with vampire blood in her system. And she turns. Did anyone else catch next weeks preview? Could be wrong, but that’s my theory. Also, I mean come on, they have to do it eventually, and I’m not sure how many more seasons VD has got. They only renewed for a 4th season THIS WEEK! The last two season were renewed in the fall/winter. Makes you wonder if they weren’t sure… which makes me sad.
Head’s up to folks reading after me: I’m fairly certain the above thread (LaineJ) should come up with a *SPOILERS AHEAD* warning, even if the show is tangentially related to the book.
Sorry, didn’t mean to bum anyone out, but the books are more than 20 years old, and I figured anyone who would care that much would already know. And I didn’t really think I was spoiling anything as I have NO idea what is going to happen–as I said it’s a theory. Who knows, the scene from next week could be a flash back of Elena’s accident with her parents.

Eh no problem. Coming from Alan Sepinwall’s Game of Thrones reviews, I’ve noticed some folks get really prickly about anything spoilerish; figured a heads up might be a good idea.
Vampire diaries was renewed in April 2011 for its third season. The news usually always comes in APril or May. Never the winter. Vampire Diaries is CW’s highest rated show. It’s not going anywhere
Didn’t the books have Damon going to different planets and stuff too? I think the writers aren’t going to go with EVERYTHING in the books. Some of it is just too stupid. Elena as an angel? That happens too in the books, right?
Julie Plec has already said everything in the books is not for them. And really, what would they possibly do if they didn’t have to save Elena at every turn? If they ever turn Elena – I’m pretty sure it won’t be until far down the line and at the end of the series.
Ugh, yes, but that was from the most recent books, 5, 6, and 7. They were written 20 years after the original 4, and they are, in a word, insane. The show is biased on the first 4 books, so far anyway. In my opinion that’s the way it should stay!

That’s exactly what I was thinking — Stefan and Damon define themselves as Elena’s saviors; she can’t be a vampire yet!
Haha… What you say is definitely true, but Elena strikes me as a girl who will need saving no netter what she is. :)
Oh, and I am also wondering how many seasons we have left. Every time this comes up, someone says “it’s the highest rated show…” but viewership has been going down steadily since season one. Average of 4 million season 1, 3 million season 2, and we are an average of 2 million for season three. The numbers are out ther, you can look for yourselves. It may be the highest rated show on the CW, but maybe it it’s the CW itself that’s not doing well. *shrugs*
Haha! I am a bit concerned with viewership too, but in all fairness ever since Firefly, I am jaded. :)
And kudos to Debbie, you always draw an interesting crowd of commenters. I very much enjoy reading your posts. :)
