Hi, I’m Liz, and I’ll be your host for this summer’s CliqueClack Re-Watch of Battlestar Galactica!
First, a little about me and the show, and my intentions for this rewatch:
When Battlestar Galactica aired in 2003 as one of Sci-Fi Channel’s miniseries (remember those? When Sci-Fi had actual miniseries events?), I watched with a little trepidation. I was a fan of the Classic BSG series, and though I hadn’t seen it in quite awhile at that point, I still had a lot of childhood fondness for it. It was not that I thought it should remain untouched and pure; on the contrary, I knew it could be updated and improved. Some of the changes I heard about, I liked. Making Starbuck and Boomer women was awesome. But some of the changes bothered me, like making them have modern-day Earth names seemed stupid. Eliminating Athena as Adama’s daughter was another, since I thought that was a dynamic element not much explored, whereas Daddy Issues are everywhere in genre TV. But the biggest change I disliked was making Tigh white. Now, I grew to love Michael Hogan’s performance, but I have distinct memories of Terry Carter’s Tigh, and the reboot eliminated both of the original African-American characters (though Boomer was changed to Asian, so at least it wasn’t a total whitewash), which seemed like going backwards.
But I kept in mind some advice from Edward James Olmos, who had said publicly that classic series fans should think of it as a different show which happened to share the same name. It turned out that I really liked it: it was exciting, the characters were interesting, and I was intrigued with this new, more complicated world that they were creating. I have made good friends through our shared love for this show. It’s one of my all-time favorites, so I’m eager to share it with other fans.
HOWEVER.
This is not intended for New Viewers. I will assume that you are TOTALLY SPOILED. If you have not watched the series in its entirety, this re-watch is not for you. Please watch the show! This will still be here when you get back.
So, to kick things off: The Miniseries!
