If you missed True Blood this week, you missed a steamy hookup involving a drunken Sookie and a hot-as-always Alcide (hey, it’s a were-thing that they run hotter; I don’t make the rules). After seeing Magic Mike this weekend along with thousands of other ladies, I fully sanction a Sookie-Alcide romance this season. You know it won’t last, and I do like her with both Eric and Bill, but it’d be fun for at least a few episodes, am I right?
Joe Manganiello has such an incredible body, and I’ve always liked the character of Alcide. There’s something to be said about having a big, strong wolf around to protect you; that is a quality I would find particularly desirable. He’s a lot less cold than the vampires, though he does get Sookie into trouble from time to time in the books.
I especially loved the scenes involving the drunken Sookie improvising the song lyrics to Rupert Holmes’ Escape: The Pina Colada Song. That was really fun, and the steamy hookup with Alcide afterwards was probably the highlight of the evening for me. I’m sure I’m not alone, as it probably fulfilled many a lustful female fantasy.
The scenes in which Eric released Pam of their blood tie for her own safety were very moving. I really like Eric and Pam’s relationship and how we’re seeing more of what makes it work. Just because he released her, I don’t think that necessarily means Pam is going to sit idly by. I still think she will do everything in her power to protect him from meeting the true death, even if that means sacrificing herself in the process.
Eric would be a wonderful maker to have, and it looks like Pam is at least attempting to follow in his footsteps as she took better charge of Tara this week, saving her from killing herself. She also taught her how to drink from a human without draining her donor completely, though I can’t say I especially cared for her thoughts on the subject while doing so. Vamps are top of the food chain, and humans are yours to savor? Yikes! Pam needs to teach the already-selfish Tara some better self-control or things are sure to get out-of-hand quickly. I predict Tara causing Pam much grief before this season is over.
We’re about four episodes into season five now, and I’ve got a confession to make. This season is not shaping up to be my favorite one thus far. I tend to get more than a little bored with the vampire politics and theology. While I didn’t hate the Authority scenes this week, I still can’t say they’re my absolute favorite either. It was interesting to watch the Guardian figure out whom the infidel in his group was and I totally saw it being the kid, so that scene did not take me by complete surprise. There was just something about the kid that made me not like him. I wasn’t weepy-eyed to see him get brutally staked.
What did surprise me were the flashbacks involving Terry Bellefleur. I didn’t enjoy seeing someone as likable as Terry opening fire on unarmed civilians because he was too high and drunk to know the difference. I hope Terry doesn’t die because his relationship with Arlene is one thing that has made them both likable characters for me – they’re likable together.
I also don’t care for what they’ve done to Fairy land. The fairies are quite ruthless in the books and they really don’t convey that as well as they could in the show. They’ve made it seem like the fairies are all refugees from the vampires, like they can’t defend themselves and must all run away to their Cirque du Soleil-inspired strip club in the sky. The show has always been a guilty pleasure at its face value, but they really need to amp up the entertainment value this season, and soon.
I think I’m just getting really, really restless with my questions concerning who let Russell Edgington out and what he’s going to do. When exactly are they going to unleash Russell? How is Sookie going to help Bill and Eric find Russell? There are only eight episodes left! I’m really looking forward to seeing him wreak havoc and make Eric and Bill squirm. I don’t want any harm to come to either of them of course (and I doubt it really will), but if Russell takes out some of the boring Authority members during his spree of vengeance, I’d be more than a little happy. Well, that’s all I’ve got to say this week. Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Memorable Quotes:
“I could’ve sold your peach-pie ass out so many times I done lost count … You survive, you always do. But God damn, do you leave a trail of bodies behind. You know what? You’re the fucking Angel of Death!” – Lafayette (to Sookie)
“Congratulations, you’re a grandfather.” – Pam (to Eric)
“Let bygones be bygones, bi-girls be bi-girls.” – Pam
“How many of us have nearly died to save her sorry ass? Well, I did them all one better … She’ll always be safe ‘cause there’ll always be some fucking fool there to take a bullet for her.” – Tara (about Sookie)
“Even when I abjured her, I still loved her.” – Alcide (to Debbie’s parents)
“Searching for Russell Edgington is a suicide mission. Either Russell will have our heads or the Authority will.” – Eric (to Pam)
“You are my one legacy. I need you to live when I’m gone … You are my child, as I was the child of Godric. You were born into greatness … You’re a maker now. Our blood will thrive.” – Eric (releasing Pam)
“No vampire of mine sleeps all night.” – Pam (waking Tara up)
“Wake up, sister. It’s just a book. I know the guy who wrote it, and he was high the whole time.” – Authority Chancellor Dieter Braun (about the Vampire Bible)
“If you like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain. If you’re not into vampires, if they shot half your brain. If you like making love at midnight and are in a cemetery …” – Sookie (drunkenly improvising The Pina Colada Song’s lyrics)
I love that scene! But I’m expecting to see more of it. Both characters deserve a more steamy, hot and explicit sex scene. It’s amazingig to see that Alcide is completely and totally in love with Sookie. If this gift is about to be presented for us, please, don’t let Sookie feel any kind of regret about it when she wake up sober. It would be a shame…
Alcide’s all right, but is the deception over a murder really a good place to start a relationship? I know it’s a high-budget soap opera, but it’d still be nice if there were a realistic number of male characters on the show who weren’t keeping terrible secrets – we’ve got what, Hoyt? And maybe Andy or Jason, unless I’m forgetting something. But Sookie does love her drama, doesn’t she.
As for the kid vampire, the actor’s line delivery was pretty awful.
The Pam storyline has been pretty interesting, even though I haven’t cared much for the character before.
