TV on DVD – Sept. 30, 2008

My Three Sons: The First Season, Vol. 1. I’m overly excited about this DVD set, because it was one of my all-time favorite shows as a kid (and it still cheers me up to watch it). There’s just something about Fred MacMurray as Steve Douglas, patiently dispensing fatherly advice to his household of boys. These early black-and-white episodes include sons Mike, Robbie, and Chip, along with Bub, Steve’s father-in-law. The cover art mentions music changes, and I sincerely hope they didn’t mess with the opening music over the famous tapping feet. That would be a travesty! Three discs, 420 minutes. Buy now.

My Name is Earl: Season Three. We love this show around our house. Although some of the storylines are too adult-oriented for the 8 p.m. viewing hour (is there even such a thing anymore?), it’s still very funny, and no one does Karma better than the Earl gang. I’m glad they’ve gotten back to their roots for season 4, but season 3’s Earl-in-jail stories were funny, too. Four discs, 462 minutes. Buy now.

2008 Olympics: Beijing 2008 Complete Opening Ceremony. Would YOU fork over $20.99 to have this in your collection? I wouldn’t, but for sports buffs, it might be nifty to have. Includes a special index to help you navigate through the ceremony. Two discs, 240 minutes. Buy now.

NUMB3RS: The Complete Fourth Season. Rob Morrow plays dedicated FBI agent Don Eppes, who recruits his math-genius brother Charlie (David Krumholtz) to help solve cases. Their dad Alan (Judd Hirsch) is happy the two brothers are working together. I’ve only seen a few eps of this series, but it has a great cast and an interesting story. Five discs, 720 minutes. Buy now.

Adam 12: Season Two. “One-Adam 12, One-Adam 12…” Ah, it takes me back. The popular cop show starring Martin Milner and Kent McCord aired from 1968 to 1975, but did you know it was a spin-off of Dragnet? Plenty of bonus features, including commentaries by members of the LAPD, Tour of Reed & Malloy’s Training Center, and Ride-Along Fact Track. Four discs, 660 minutes. Buy now.

Beauty and the Beast: The Complete Series. Before she was Sarah Connor in The TerminatorLinda Hamilton hung out with the the mythic, noble man-beast known as Vincent (Ron Perlman, pre Hellboy). Together, their love story knows no bounds…sniff… 16 Discs, 2654 minutes. Buy now.

The Jewel in the Crown (25th Anniversary Edition). This sweeping epic from A&E TV follows the end of the British Empire in India. The stellar cast includes Dame Peggy Ashcroft, Charles Dance, and Art Malik. Four discs, 750 minutes. Buy now.

Meerkat Manor: The Next Generation – Season 4. The Whiskers family is back, but they’ve got issues, as usual. Now they’re split into two groups, led by domineering sisters Rocket Dog and Maybelline. Have you ever watched this show? I started watching a few seasons ago, when Sean Astin was narrating. It’s easy to get hooked on the cute little critters. Buy now.
