Hey, kids! It’s time for a quick round-up of highlights from this week’s episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart and the rest of TDS‘s gang did live coverage on election night. Don’t know if you heard, but it was historic. The spectacular was actually only moderately spectacular but still a lot of fun to watch, simply because we were all experiencing the excitement at the same moment. The atmosphere was distinctly different from that of the 2004 live coverage. There was a palpable anxiety and fear in the air back then, and I can remember Jon ripping up his cards in frustration at one point. This time, it was easy to sense that it was less about being anxious and just waiting for the inevitable to happen. Spoiler alert: Barack Obama won.
I’m certainly not worried about Jon and Stephen finding things to mock during the next four (eight?) years. President Obama may seem like a dream president to some people, but it will be impossible for him to maintain absolute perfection in everything he does. Even if he somehow manages to magically avoid political controversy, he’ll at least throw up on a foreign leader at a fancy dinner. Of that, I am sure. Plus, we’ve still got his cabinet, the Senate, the House, various jag-off lobbyists, the Obama White House puppy… There’s plenty of douchebaggery opportunities to go around! I mean, I wouldn’t mind being proven wrong, but I’m trying extra-hard not to get my hopes up.
But until Obama actually gets sworn in, this beautiful moment at the end of the election special will have to suffice.
Paul Rudd stopped by to promote his movie, Role Models, and he brought some of his best moves with him, which he later passed on to Jon. Well played, boys.
Over on TCR, Stephen was angry, but not quite as angry as I thought he was going to be about Obama’s win. Honestly, I expected the cold open of the first episode back to just be him crying non-stop. I also thought he was going to burn his McCain banner, but maybe that’s something to do on Inauguration Day, when there’s no denying Obama’s victory.
I really loved this interview with Andrew Young. Beautifully done!
Due to the scary economy, Stephen hunted down another recession-proof job: super-spy. I pass by the International Spy Museum every time I visit the National Portrait Gallery (which is probably too often, even for an artist), but now I’m extra-tempted to go in there, despite the non-free-ness of it all. I’m excited for the conclusion of this report.
Stephen singing “Happy Birthday” to his mother in Latin was also a very special moment.
I’m hoping that the Obama’s get one of those huge horse like dogs – comedy gold right there.
The interview with Andrew Young kicked ass… I love it that so many guests now really give Stephen a run for his money. Those fake interviews are so much easier to take than TDS having someone from Fox News over for 10 minutes of complete bullshit.
I have to admit, I did wish Colbert had been more in character when he did the live report with Jon Stewart, but I loved his re-imagining of Indecision 08’s credits. On a side note, although I thought his first interview with Young was kick butt (what with the choreographed sing-a-long & all), after seeing his scripted interview with the ambassador versus the earlier, unscripted one, I think this one is far better regarding his dialogue (so, yay to the ending of the writer’s strike :) On a side side note, I LOVED his spy interview, but almost felt sorry for the guy he interviewed, because of how on Colbert appeared ;)
I thought it was really sweet that Stephen semi-broke character to wish his mom a happy birthday, pronouncing the t and the end of Colbert. He really is not only a comedic genius but also a great guy and anyone who’s not buying it needs to go look on youtube for his behind the scenes videos.
