Daily Show/Colbert Report – Anne Hathaway hits on Jon, Jon touches kids, Stephen beats Kanye West

(Week of December 1, 2008)

Hey, kids! It’s time for a quick round-up of highlights from this week’s episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. It’s been a long break, and it feels good to be back. What’s up with those guys needing such a long break anyway? It’s painfully selfish of them to spend time with their families during Thanksgiving or whatever the hell Americans call it. Don’t they know we need snarky commentary on politics to get through the holidays?!

Ahem. Anyway. This week was all right. The sudden drop of election coverage has left a strange void in the writing room, I’m sure, because now we’re getting stuff like “Paging Dr. Mandvi.” That was bizarre, to say the least.

First things first… Anne Hathaway. I have two questions about this little lady. 1) Is it possible to naturally have eyes that overwhelmingly huge? 2) How does she get to so casually flirt with all these men I love? She did that Get Smart movie with Steve Carell and then promoted it at the SoHo Apple Store in an interview with Carell, hosted by Stephen Colbert. And now Jon Stewart? It’s unfair, is what it is. Some may say she deserves it after all that difficulty with her crazy ex-boyfriend, but I say she’d better keep her hands to herself if she knows what’s good for her. ‘Cause I’ll shake my fist at her whenever she’s on-screen. That’ll really hurt her feelings.

In a less sexy segment called “Jon Touches Kids,” Jon talked about the already hilarious Plaxico Burress incident. Really, getting shot by a gun in your sweatpants? You can’t make that up.

In an even less sexier segment, John Oliver talked about the Mumbai tragedies. I was wondering how they were going to take on such a touchy subject, but I think they did it beautifully. It was not only funny but weirdly inspiring and touching.

On the Colbert Report, Stephen interviewed someone named Barbara Walters and threw on his best Vaseline filter to show respect. I don’t actually have a lot to say about Baba Wawa; I just like hearing her talk.

My favorite part of the week was watching him totally own Kanye West and his new album “808s and Heartbreak” Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak (Bonus Video Version) - Love Lockdown, though. The power of the Colbert Nation over iTunes is impressive, but not quite enough to take on Britney Spears, evidently. That woman is like a rock. On a side-note, Kanye West’s album is mainly robot noises and drums, and there’s, like, two and a half good songs, tops.

Hopefully, you all caught the Christmas special that was on a few weeks ago. It was pretty marvelous, in a campy sort of way. The cheese was almost too much for me at one point, but I got over it as soon as Jon and Stephen stepped beneath that mistletoe. Most. Anticlimactic Jewish/Catholic moment. Ever. I also enjoyed John Legend’s song “Nutmeg” so much that I went on iTunes and grabbed that album Stephen Colbert - A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!. I downloaded music legally for Colbert. Now, that‘s devotion. And obeying the law.

Also, also: CliqueClack is giving away two copies of A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All! Check out this post for more details on how to enter. It’s super-easy, I swear.
