(Week of January 19, 2008)
Hey, kids! It’s time for a quick round-up of highlights from this week’s episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Barack Obama was sworn in as president on Tuesday, so it was no surprise that the entire week’s hot topic was the Inauguration. TDS did a live show, but not too much super-special came from it. I did, however, greatly enjoy the following day’s John Oliver report form the Mall, in which he touched upon subjects like the n-word and making out with various men and women slowly freezing to death.
I think we also saw Jon make fun of a person in a wheelchair for the first time. But it was Dick Cheney, so … you know. Also, I will find a way to start a rock band called “The Minutia of Fuschia.” Count on it.
As for Samantha Bee’s report on the end of immature, frat boy humor, I was overcome with a wave of comedy shame, because Jon’s endless giggles were exactly like mine throughout the ceremonies. Hell, I even chuckled at Aretha Franklin’s dramatic pause during “my country,” because, yes, I am twelve years-old.
Gitmo later made a surprise appearance in an oddly serious exchange. I mean, as serious as an exchange between Jon Stewart and a bearded Elmo can get.
Over on the Colbert Report, Stephen reacted rather emotionally to the Inauguration coverage, despite his best efforts to seem detached. I must say, that runny mascara look doesn’t work for Mr. Colbert, though he rocked the eyeliner pretty well during his “Charlene (I’m Right Behind You)” video. This was a real treat for anyone that likes super-weepy Stephen and/or snot-covered desks.
In news unrelated to Barack Obama (wow!), Stephen managed to start another re-mix meme based around an interview he did about re-mixing. After seeing some of the Internet contributions, Stephen created his own dance mix and simultaneously managed to scare and amaze the audience. Prepare for black lights and rave walruses. I said, prepare!
I have to admit I wasn’t impressed with either SC or JS’s live reports, (altho Jon’s first 10 mins – the analysis of Obama’s speech, the mocking of the creepy minister, the parallel between Obama & Bush, & the mockery of Cheney were hilarious). However, the next day, as you said, I loved Oliver’s sexual assault of all people on the mall (which I expected during the live report) and Stephen’s dance mix (is it wrong if I download it to my ipod?).
