Medium – Agent Cooper is back, and he means business

No, not Dale Cooper, although I admit that would be pretty awesome. I mean Agent Edward Cooper, or rather his ghost, brilliantly played by Kurtwood Smith. Even though to me he will always be Red Forman from That 70’s Show, there’s no denying that Kurtwood Smith makes creepy look easy.

We knew it couldn’t be that simple, didn’t we? There’s no way Cooper would just give away precious information like that and not expect anything in return. I know I’ve seen the other two episodes he’s appeared in throughout the years, although my memory is a little fuzzy on exactly what it was that he did. I did remember that he’s from the school of taking lives to save lives.

Although I wouldn’t say I was particularly surprised to see that he was the force driving Bobby Whitman to kill those people, it did catch me off guard for a second and make me say, “Aha!” Because up until then, it wasn’t making sense to me, why the boy would be doing it in the first place, and how he was able to be so successful and not leave a trace of evidence.

Also, I must say, with all of the teenage boys we see on this show, Bobby has to be my favorite, both for his character and for the actor portraying him, Charlie McDermott. I admit a lot of the boys who’ve been on the show wouldn’t know what acting was if it bit them in the ass, but this kid, I believed. I felt for him. I could see the anguish in his face when he told Allison about the man who killed his family and the guilt he felt for not being able to save them.

And I was especially sorry to see him put the gun to his own head in the end. Why do they always do that?! I know you can’t kill a ghost, but really, is killing yourself the answer? If he’d have just stuck to his guns, Cooper would have given up and gone on to the next poor clairvoyant soul to try and convince to do his dirty deeds.

Finally, the closing scene:

It frustrates me a little bit because it’ll probably be forgotten about by next week, but wouldn’t it be cool if we got at least one more episode out of this? It just seems unfinished. Either way, it did leave me with the heebie-jeebies, thanks to the music, and all that blood. Yet at the same time I cracked a smile at the exasperated expression on Cooper’s face, and half expected him to call Bobby a dumbass. What a great episode, that’s all.

I really liked this episode of Medium and was really impressed with not only this boy’s character but also the actor portraying him. It seems like there is so much more they can do with this character in the future. It was really interesting the fact that he is this teenage boy with the same gift as Alison, but not the same maturity level to handle the possibilities with the gift. At this point I want to hear more about his character even though now he is ghost. I would like to know about how his perspective on the whole situation has changed now that he is on the other side. I am new to watching this show and am curious why these “spirits” are still stuck in this realm of existence anyway. I know that they come and talk to Alison every now and then, but don’t they have anywhere else to go?
