It’s not that Nip/Tuck has pulled punches at any point during it’s run. In fact, that’s what makes Nip/Tuck such a fun show. As ridiculous and over-the-top soapy as it can be at times (alright, all of the time), it’s that sense that anything can happen on this show that keeps it entertaining. Sure, the last couple seasons have not been on par with the earlier outings of the show, but it still keeps my attention.
This week’s episode was no exception, and it showed just how serious this show is about ending with a bang. If you haven’t watched this week’s episode, be forewarned that spoilers are contained within.
As much as I realize that anything can happen on Nip/Tuck, I didn’t think that the writers were going to kill off Kimber before the end of the series, and in such a bleakly, depressing way. These most recent episodes (along with some that came at the end of last year) have been very dark. Christian and Sean are more at odds than ever, Sean tried to kill himself, Christian is self-destructive, and their families are completely in ruins. I’m hoping that there is going to be some sort of happy ending on this show. I suppose “happy” isn’t the right word; I just want a glimmer of hope to end everything. Right now, that’s looking less and less likely.
I’ll miss Kimber for the remaining episodes, even though the previews for next week’s outing showed a return for the ex-porn star. I’m hoping that her memory will be haunting Christian, and perhaps help him make some changes in his life. I get that he’s the most horrible person — that’s his shtick — but it would be just a little too depressing to end this show with Christian completely alone.
One thing that I have been missing in these episodes is the rest of the cast. This show used to be about more than just Christian and Sean, but more and more they are the sole focus of Nip/Tuck. The show has suffered without the continued presence of Joely Richardson, Liz hasn’t been given anything to do, and even Matt has been missing for many of these episodes (though that doesn’t have me nearly as upset as Julia’s absence). Some weeks this show feels like a chore to watch, sometimes it just feels like a freak show, and sometimes … sometimes it’s as brilliant as it ever has been.
