This week’s episode of Medium was creepy as crap. Not because of the usual serial killer-y reasons, but because of that damn burglar alarm. I do not like the idea of that thing talking to Marie; it reminds me too much of that stupid computer in 2001, and I hate that movie more than Nazis. With that said, Marie has been in the background for most of this season, so I definitely enjoyed a storyline in which she was prominently featured.
The nice thing about watching Medium from the beginning is watching the girls grow up. Marie isn’t a baby any longer, and Ariel is applying to colleges. Speaking of which, how fun was it to see Fish try to get Ariel to lie to his wife about his secret family? I loved that he showed up, since he was probably my favorite Ally McBeal character.
With that said, I wasn’t particularly in love with the resolution to that. One, that lady found out a lot of information in a very short period of time, and two, she either needed to be furious with Ariel or forgive her. Instead, she did both. She got super-pissed and believed that Ariel had an affair with her husband, but was then a total cop-out when she told Ariel that she was smart and would get into a great college, “just not this one.” Weak sauce.
Jonathan Silverman, of whom I am also a fan, guest starred as Matt, the dude who was murdered. This storyline was pretty interesting to me. I understand that the “murderer” needed money and was in a bad way, but I’m still not sure that’s enough to justify killing a neighbor. Granted, the neighbor wanted to die, but still. Ending a life? A lot of people have been in trouble with their mortgages in the past few years, but none of them have resulted in assisted suicide.
The one thing that was nice about this episode was that we didn’t get the common “you’re crazy” response to Allison. The fact that Marie wouldn’t identify the killer is a perfectly logical reason to let the bad guy go. It’s always nice when they can find real world reasons not to believe Allison, instead of, “Come on, why are we supposed to believe a dream?”
What did you think of this episode? Do you hate 2001 as much as I do? I’m curious.
Granted, Patricia Arquete is a beautiful woman, and she was amazing in True Romance. But yawn…Medium is so boring. Some 42 year old woman has a dream about something or other and does something about it…yawn a frakin rama…It really is the airport novel of science fiction / supernatural tv. btw anyone that hates 2001: A Space Odyssey is an idiot.
Kona, good review as always. I was pleased to see both principal plots of this episode focussing on the Dubois children, especially Marie.
I hope Medium returns, if only to see Ariel graduate and go off to college. We’ve gone from seeing Marie as a baby to seeing Marie riding her bicycle without assistance! I was surprised that Allison and Joe let Marie out on her bicycle when there’s a murderer roaming the streets, especially one that probably recognises Marie! It was creepy seeing her complete the task so diligently.
I know Allison gets so invested in solving the crime, still it bugged me how she didn’t seem to believe or be too concerned about Marie, just like she did in Baby Fever with Bridgette.
Poor Ariel, those pesky ghosts just can’t be trusted! Although I enjoyed the resolution with the beaver a few episodes ago much better, it showed that Ariel still has a lot to discover/learn as far as her gift goes.
