After watching the season 6 finale of Medium, you can definitely tell that their being picked up for a season 7 was far from an inevitability. The episode seemed like they had confidence in their return, but still wanted to give it a nice ending, just in case. It was a far cry from the “suck it, NBC” season 5 finale, which they purposely ended with a cliffhanger in a bid to stay on the air.
This time, we’re dealing with Ariel going away to college at Dartmouth and Allison not being able to deal with it. So what follows is a very disturbing episode in which a dead Allison haunts Ariel and creates some sort of weird Grey Gardens-esque life that includes solving murders from beyond the grave. It was an interesting take on someone who always seems like a mom who’s always with it, and understands what her kids need. Allison knew she was holding her daughter back from the life she was supposed to be leading, but her obsession prevented her from stopping.
The rest of the episode almost makes you wonder if there was an alternate ending planned at one point. The end, with everyone together at Lee and Lynn’s wedding certainly fulfilled the happy wedding that is a favorite of season finales, but everything leading up to it, with both Allison and Devalos’s death got me thinking. If Medium hadn’t been picked up, was there another ending in which the whole thing wasn’t a dream? Does Allison just go to sleep and never wake up? Does Devalos actually die, and does Ariel run away, leaving her father and sisters behind?
It certainly would have been a bold move. We got a glimpse into a future that could be, but I’m not entirely sure that Glenn Gordon Caron would want to end the series on such a low note. On the other hand, the series nearly did end after season five with Allison in a coma, so maybe he would have left a swath of destruction in his wake.
What do you think? If Medium hadn’t gotten a season 7, would we have seen a different ending to this episode?
I think that there wouldn’t be a different ending if there weren’t a season seven of ‘Medium’ because if there wasn’t gonna be a season seven, then that ending would be perfectly great and it wouldn’t end so sadly I don’t think. It would make sense if the last episode ever was a happy ending. That’s my thought about it.
May I just say that it is so awesome that ‘Medium’ is coming back for a seventh season though… that’s just amazing, and I have a feeling that it’s going to be an exciting season too. The show is great, and the last episode of season six was amazingly awesome. This show is surviving just as well as Allison Dubois, played by the talented actress, Patricia Arquette! :D
