Medium – 2001 is a terrible movie

Allison and Bridgette switch places, and Paulie Walnuts makes a bizarre appearance. 'Medium' kicks off season seven with an episode that's kind of hilarious.

Medium starts out season 7 on a light note. It’s Freaky Friday in the Dubois household! Tony Sirico guest-stars as a Paulie Walnuts-ish dead guy in the beginning of the episode, who weirdly has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the season premiere. He’s there, he tries to watch cable porn, and then he’s gone.

After the credits, we get a Bridgette episode, in which she has a crush on a boy. This, as we have learned from similar experiences that Ariel has had in the past, means that he’s kind of a murderer. Sure enough, the kid is staging Logan Echolls-like bum fights with a homeless dude. Except instead of actual fights, he’s having the guy eat disgusting things and pull his tooth out with pliers.

Allison finds out about this when the homeless man’s son comes in to complain about his father being exploited. It’s pretty obvious from minute one that he’s the bad guy, but it doesn’t really matter. Bridgette and Allison switching places is so funny and well done, that the murder of the week is almost secondary.

Patricia Arquette does some fantastic things with her Bridgette performance. She does a good job of holding the cereal spoon just right, and she does an excellent job of insulting Arial and Marie. My favorite Allison-as-Bridgette moment, however, has to be when she checks out her new boobs not once, but twice. Because of course that’s what she would do! Who wouldn’t?

Here’s something that kind of continuously bugs me about Medium though: the lack of follow-through with storylines. Every now and then, we’ll get a character like Joe’s boss, who will pop up every couple episodes or so, but for the most part, characters who are introduced are introduced for one episode only. So even though Cameron is the first boy who’s ever asked Bridgette out, and he’s not actually a murderer, I have the distinct feeling that we’ll never see him again.

They do this with Ariel all the time, and it’s unfortunate. I know the kids aren’t the focus of the show, but it would be nice to see them get somewhat of a continuing storyline. Regardless, this was a light, fun, and engaging way to start season 7. I’m definitely excited to see where they go next.

It was definitely enjoyable. Both actresses did so well mocking each other. The girl who plays Bridgette must have worked very hard at being an adult. She even had the right inflections.

I don’t get the beginning scene, either….wait – wasn’t it a dream? I think the point was just to have murder, and use the filming technique in a dream to give some context to what was to come. Crazy context, but context all the same.
