Medium – This feels like the beginning of the end

'Medium' is half-way through what is more than likely going to be their final season. This week's episode feels like the beginning of the countdown.

After seven seasons, the fact that people in Allison’s life are still trying to get her to dismiss her dreams still cracks me up. Joe spent a lot of time doing that this week, which seems ridiculous on its face, but I now completely understand: the poor guy just wants to go back to bed. I’m sure that if I were being woken up multiple times every night, I would say anything just to make it stop. “I’m sure it doesn’t mean anything,” is as good of a response as any, I would say.

The mystery of the week kind of creeped me out though, for a couple of reasons. One, being trapped in a burning building seems like one of the more terrible ways to die, and two, Jesus Christ. It would really be easy for a fireman to be a serial killer, wouldn’t it? This guy was a contract killer, but when we first saw him murder his daughter, he really just seemed like a sicko who was using his job as an easy way to kill women. You guys, how easy would that be? Remind me to never end up in a fire.

A lot was going on this week, beyond creepy firefighters. Now that CBS has cut Medium’s season order, the unofficial countdown to the end has begun. This week, the characters seem to be planning for the end too, with everyone moving on to hopefully bigger and better things.

Devalos has been personally asked by the mayor to run for his position, which leads Allison to bring up a good point: if Devalos becomes mayor, she may be out of a job. Now, I’m sure that they could find some place for Allison, but it certainly seems as though this is meant to signal a definite shift in the way things will be going forward, if not an all-out ending.

On that same note, Allison has decided to take charge of her own future and go back to school to become a lawyer. While that’s clearly a good life decision for Allison, it doesn’t make for the most compelling television show. Ariel has already left to go to college across the country, now with Devalos and Allison both possibly changing their position, it really seems as though Medium is working hard to wrap everything up.

As much of a fan as I am of the show, this didn’t really disappoint me too much. Seven seasons is  a great run for a series, so if it has to end here, they can certainly do it in a satisfying way.

What do you think? Is Medium wrapping up, or does it still have some fight left in it?

Did the writers even know that this season will be the last when they filmed this episode? The cut to 13 episodes was only announced a few weeks ago.

I’m sure they didn’t know that their episode order had been cut, but they probably have a feeling that this is going to be their last season regardless, so they should start wrapping things up.

I hope the writers aren’t naive enough to think that they have a chance for an 8th season and leave it open ended.

I have seen people complain about the show ending. It was saved by CBS, we got three dozen more episodes. I’m not the biggest fan of the show, but as long as they end it well I don’t mind. Seven years is a perfect time for the show to wrap up.

I will be sad to see it go because I do enjoy it and love the family dynamic they portray but, on the other hand, it clearly has ‘done’ everything it can do, you know? Not that it isn’t still interesting but it’s never going to get MORE viewers, MORE attention, MORE press, etc. at this point.
