Diary of a One Tree Hill Virgin – What could have been

I've almost reached the Season 2 Finale of 'One Tree Hill.' In the episodes leading up to it, Nathan explores the question of how life would have been different had his dad married Karen instead of his mom.

Welcome to my One Tree Hill Virgin Diary, where I began watching the seasons for the first time about a month ago. I hope you enjoy reading my take on this great series.

I admit that I haven’t been able to watch many episodes since last Friday’s entry, due to vacation and family visits. However, I am very happy that this week’s viewings included “Limetime Piling Up,” where, in recovery from his race car “accident,” Nathan dreams what life would have been like if his father had married Karen instead of his mom Deb.

The characters were pretty convincing in this episode. Karen plays the cheating wife just as well as she plays the mom with a heart of gold. Dan has a drinking problem, which isn’t too far-fetched. And Nathan and Lucas’ roles being switched didn’t throw me for a loop too badly, considering I initially thought this series would feature Lucas as a rich jerk.

The episode, and the one following it, did make me pine a little bit for Nathan and Haley’s relationship. It seems as though every episode waffles between showing their marriage as over, and then showing promise a few scenes later. In “What Could Have Been,” Haley is getting ready to make her exit right after her last performance; she has decided to come home to Nathan. But of course, in walks perpetual mood-killer Dan Scott and shows her the petition for annullment, which Nathan has “already signed.” (I say this in quotes because I wouldn’t put it past Dan to forge his son’s signature just to keep the couple from reconciling.) What is going to happen to them?

Also, I was interested to see that Nathan and Lucas have both decided to move back to their respective homes. I think that Nathan understands Lucas’ move to be an act of peace; their conversation prior to this decision included Nathan asking Lucas to back off looking into his dad’s finances and personal history. However, Lucas and Andy have been conducting this investigation in secret, and despite the discovery that Dan’s embezzlement has been going into Lucas’s college fund, Lucas still wants to continue on and find out all they can.

Brooke’s behavior (seeming interested in pursuing a relationship one minute, and then insisting that they are just friends the next) has probably seemed confusing to Lucas, even though we know why she has backed off. I’m not sure what I would do in that situation. Did she suddenly realize that, even if Peyton was totally fine with the two of them having a relationship, Lucas isn’t necessarily over Peyton? I wouldn’t take that box of pictures and drawings to mean too much. I have tons of mementos from all different periods in my life, but that doesn’t mean that I want to relive them.

And we know that Peyton and Jake are not in contact anymore at his request, but what about Jenny? We haven’t seen her since the episode after Coach Whitey drove off with her, and what we did see was the same thing — she was asleep in her car seat as Coach wore a remorseful look on his face. I’m sure that in the Season 2 finale (which I haven’t watched yet, but which is next on my list), some of these major questions will be answered. Be sure to come back next week and read my reactions!
