The ratings for the last episode were terrible. (.89m/.4) That right there should be enough indication that the ailing Battlestar Galactica prequel is doomed. It lost a ton of viewers from the Stargate Universe lead-in. In fact, its ratings for the return-from-hiatus episode were worse than the “1.0 finale” from earlier this year. Which leads us to …
Alessandra Torresani‘s comment. On a recent interview on G4’s Attack of the Show, she let slip that the show would be canceled if it didn’t at least meet the ratings for the 1.0 finale. Oops. She could have been guessing or just making for a lot of drama, to get fans to campaign their arses off for new people to come to the show. Or, she said something she shouldn’t have. In any case, she’s also reportedly very interested in being the new Wonder Woman for TV. What kind of faith does that show? Speaking of faith …
Ronald D. Moore‘s new project plate. I know he’s not actively involved with Caprica, really only acting as an EP for the show. However, when ratings are tanking for your baby and you don’t roll up your sleeves to retool things … that shows quite a lack of faith and interest. Fans who came over to Caprica because they believe in RDM’s work — only to see him step further away from the project — can’t be feeling all that cozy at the moment. He’s got a couple of new projects he’ll be very busy with.
The show hasn’t improved enough. The latest episode was a baby step in the right direction, but it just wasn’t enough. This pretty much sums up the other three points above. Even a Blow the Hatch moment might not be enough to interest viewers at this point.
We’ll probably see the first season of Caprica finish up, but I don’t see a second season in its future. Oh, and before you ask me (like a not-to-be-named commenter already has) — if you want to know “what would have happened” if the show gets canceled (like I did for Defying Gravity), the answer is simple: go watch Battlestar Galactica. I kill me!
I really liked the premiere. I’m concerned that people didn’t get the memo that it was changed from a January premiere date to October. I like it much more than SGU. I don’t know how much longer I can watch Rush hallucinating in his thought process. So boring!
I was kind of hoping the opening scene on Caprica was real, even though the cast would be devastated. It would have been a game changer, for sure!
This episode really took a lot of out me to watch. I just don’t care about half of the stuff going on on the show, and the half that I do got a lot less interesting this week.
They really should have left it on Friday. There is too much competition on the networks on a Tuesday now that the new season is underway. I guess the people who watch(ed) the show expect more BSG and less Dynasty. The problem now is if the show gets cancelled, I’m sure they’ve already completed shooting on the season, so we’ll be left with a cliffhanger – of sorts. I doubt Syfy would produce a movie to finish these characters’ stories leading up to the events of BSG.
2 other reasons:
— Tuesday night is ratings juggernaut for the broadcast nets. I can’t fathom what Syfy was thinking moving original scripted programming up against the CBS schedule that night.
— Even more damning was the fact that ‘Caprica’ disappeared completely from the schedule for 6 months or more. By not re-running the first half of the season over the summer the net missed the chance to pick up new viewers or refresh it in the minds of the casual first-run viewers. Not as if the dvds were available. The all-day marathon strategy does no good for people who have work/a life.
Also Syfy should have re-run SGU before the syndicated rights kicked in.
OH IT WAS ME! The Scarlet BSG on my chest burns! :)
But seriously, there will be many holes to fill. The Guardians, Graystone in the tub, Head people, they could give us so many answers! Alas, it’s not to be….
I’m more worried about Stargate Universe to be honest, I gave Caprica a try but it didn’t do much for me, and felt like it was well on it’s way to being a more religious polemic than even BSG was, so I lost interest. SGU has been incredible this season in my opinion, but unfortunately the ratings haven’t reflected that, and it looks like it’s running a real risk of being cancelled. I really hope it isn’t though, it’s one of the few quality sci-fi shows left on TV!
The show hasn’t improved enough.
Exactly. I thought the pilot was fun, liked the ending, won the DVD from this site. lol
However it just never went anywhere!
The move to Tuesdays was a stupid STUPID move by Syfy (even worse than the name change), however the show was dead long before then.
Modwild people probably didn’t get the memo of the move from January to October, but that’s because they simply didn’t care!
Caprica is okay at best. I only really watch it because of the loyalty resulting from BSG. I do not think I would watch it otherwise.
SGU is the far superior show at the moment.
