In anticipation of the 2011 Emmy coverage, one has to wonder: Do The Emmys need to be fixed … instead of “being” fixed? (Cripes … hasn’t this little argument raised its head annually round about this time of year again and again … and again?)
Why Are TV’s Top-Rated Shows Ignored at the Emmys? makes some pretty good points. True: police procedurals have not only been a big garner of nominations, but have won tons, too. And maybe voters have grown too freakin’ snobbish with their swoonery over The Sopranos, Mad Men, Game Of Thrones and others.
And, as the article mentions, the Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences isn’t alone in its exclusive little pick-and-choose club. Beside the piece’s mention of The Oscars, I’ll go one further and call out The Grammys. It’s been more years than I care to mention since someone left the door open to let the inmates rule that asylum. Still, I tune in every year because I continue to go gaga over music. (Keep your Poker Face references to yourself, you.)
On the not-so-outer Fringe, (that was a not-so-veiled John Noble reference) however, there are those fans out there who will yell and scream and whine and complain about boycotting The Emmys because their favorite show was snubbed yet again. To them I say: Grow up. You’re doing nothing but hurting yourself. If you really want to make a difference, watch the show and talk about it. Write about. Get angry about what you’re not getting out of the telecasts, put that anger to good use and figure out how to chime in where it will do the most good.
A good friend of mine said if you whine about something and that’s all you do, you’re nothing but a big, fat whiner. However, whine about it and actually do something about it — like call out the responsible parties and make them account for their actions (or at least try to) — and you’re not only getting satisfaction but you’re letting those parties know someone out there is concerned with their one-sided opinions.
In other words: Do nothing, get nothing. Stir the pot and you at least get the (slim) chance to pull up some of the dredge from the bottom and possibly remove it. You don’t get what you don’t ask for, remember.

Due to John Noble yet again being snubbed by the Emmy committee (committee: pinko commies who hate all that is beautiful and good) I will be boycotting this year’s Emmys. Of course, the fact that I’ll be in the middle if a 6-hour drive at the time the Emmy’s air makes it somewhat easier to follow through on this threat.
