Arrested Development the movie & 2012 TV series, says Hurwitz!

I know we've heard this before. I know we've been strung along for years. Could we finally, finally see the next chapter of the most lovable unlikable family in television?

Arrested Development fans, I know we’ve been through a lot in the last few years. We’ve heard this story so many times, it might be easy to not trust news like this. But when we’re told this Sunday that we’re not only getting a movie, but also a 9-10 episode mini-season leading up to the movie all in 2013 … it’s so tempting to believe them. My hope grew when Will Arnett and Jason Bateman tweeted that it was true this afternoon, but I really started getting excited when I found out this came from Mitch Hurwitz‘s mouth himself. The mini-season is supposedly being released sometime fall 2012, with the film released sometime late 2012 or early 2013.

I can pick any of their 53 episodes at random and discover something new about the dialogue and the background jokes. Arrested Development was such a smart, carefully crafted comedy with the right cast in the right roles.  Now that I think about it, it is the comedy equivalent of Firefly … and that got a movie, too! What I like about them potentially making a mini-season is it will be easier to catch up with the characters in the years since the last episode. The extra few hours to explain what’s been happening to the Bluth family will give Hurwitz and the rest of the writing team some time to spread the funny out.

I’m still hesitant about believing we really will see the movie and mini-season in under a year and a half, but I can’t help but start thinking of who I can’t wait to see the most. Gob is obviously up there, as is Buster and his hook. I love Lucille as the dominating matriarch of the family, and the always incompetent Barry Zuckerkorn (played by Henry Winkler, who talked to me about his involvement in the film back in February). Really, I love them all, but if I had to choose one I missed the most … it has to be David Cross’ Tobias Fünke. In celebration of this pending news, enjoy this montage of Tobiasisms (warning: semi-NSFW depending on how well your boss understands euphemisms).

I find myself wanting to be ecstatic but not really able to believe it’ll happen. I keep checking my computer’s date to make sure it’s not April 1. I keep wondering if Hurwitz & the whole cast could be pulling an elaborate prank on all of us. But I can’t believe they’d do that to the fanbase. It’s going to take some time to absorb the news and actually understand that it’s probably going to happen.

In other news world peace has happened, everyone has a job, no more disaster happen, unicorns are working down the street and here come the flying pigs.

All of which is more likely than this news story actually happening.

Oh ye of little faith. While I don’t pretend to be SURE that this will happen, I’m not ready to give up just yet.

Eh, in the meantime, I’m still enjoying the occasional mini-reunions on Archer.
